I left for Israel and Rome with the intent of blogging my progress. This would accomplish two things: one, keep a running record of our trip, and two, keep family at home informed of our progress.

There were many challenges with writing the blog for the trip. Some included the use of an iPod for my device to blog on during the trip. I left my computer at home in order to save weight and bulk and carried the iPod in my front pocket. My keyboard was the size of one’s palm and was touch operated. I apologize for any spelling errors but ask indulgence since my mode of communication was palm sized, like texting on a phone.

This afternoon I took time to edit my posts and update the blog for those who might want to print off the blog as a source for their trip, especially about where we went each day. If there are any other mistakes I overlooked in editing it is my sole responsibility and not Penny’s for she is the eyes which corrects many errors while editing the Maritime Messenger. She enjoyed the Holy Land and was spared the chaotic editing required. I do want to thank Ellen for posting a couple blogs.

My hope is for all who have read this blog found it entertaining and informative.

My second challenge was internet connectivity. We are truly blessed in Canada and the US with free Wifi spots by which we can access the Internet. There were many times I purchased an hours worth of time for $8 US or $5 Euros. Traveling made blogging either a blessed event or a real hassle. I’m grateful for the Comfort Inn JFK for free Wifi, though its connection could be frustrating. In all we don’t realize what we have in Canada for communications until one no longer has access to these systems in a foreign land.

Thank you for your kindness in reading my ramblings.

Shalom, Tom

We left at noon from our hotel in Jamaica, New York for LaGuardia Airport. Upon arriving we found our Montreal flight canceled and a new trip to Toronto being arranged. From Toronto we would fly to Montreal and make our scheduled connection.

We braved lines in Toronto and waited in Montreal until our flight for Charlottetown. All I could think of on our approach was, “Put this baby down.” The rocking and strong winds and blowing snow and iced runway made for a thrill meant for roller coasters and not Jazz jets. But soon our accomplished pilot had us taxying toward the terminal.

We slipped and slid across the walk and were greeted by many smiling faces of family and friends. My wife, Carrie, and Nathan and Grace were present and greeted me. Knox decided to snooze and gave orders to wake him once we were home. It was wonderful being home after our exciting trip. Probably the second most welcomed thing, after the hugs and kisses from my family, was changing out of the clothes I have been wearing for the last twelve days.

Tutto Bene

She planned to stay an extra day in Jerusalem and visit Istanbul instead of Rome. Gene left us at the Tel Aviv airport as she planned to fly back to Toronto rather than visit Rome.

Three others left us in New York as they caught a flight to Buffalo on their way back to Ontario. We were surprised to find Irene at the airport waiting for us as we headed to the hotel.

Eileen and I want to thank Lisa Goodwin for keeping track of all the connections and tickets for the various members of our trip to Israel. With Egypt being lost due to protests and Rome being added, Lisa did a fine job keeping everything in line. Thank you, Lisa.

Floyd, Ron and I joined together for some Chinese food while we spent the evening in Jamaica, New York at our hotel, Comfort Inn JFK. Picture a take out styrofoam tray layered with lo mein on the bottom and a half chicken on top all for $6.95. Rome may have the best tasting food in the world but the US has the cheapest and more quantity. Of course nothing would do for Fraser Burke than Tim Hortons. I can picture him now bowing down and kissing the Tim’s floor in supplication to the almighty double double.

The one thing about Rome is how the history is everywhere no matter where you look. If there were more time one could possibly see it all but it would require a month and a tight schedule. We literaly flew through the Vatican and came to a crawl inside St. Peters Basilica. I wanted to see the Raphael paintings and the sculptures and the map room in the Vatican Museum. It is good to have a guide but the second visit should be on one’s own in order to see the countless treasures.

We began our last day in Rome with a trip to the Vatican Museum. It is a private museum open to the public and houses the private collections of the Pope. There are countless sculptures like the bust of Socrates or the statue of Nero; and fine mosaics and tapestries; but the Sistine Chapel overshadows all the treasures with Michaelangelo’s masterpiece on the ceiling.

One of my favorite spots was after the tour and pertained to food. It was Trattoria Pizzaria A. Spinoaz about two blocks from the Vatican. My sausage and mushroom pie must have been made by angels (near the Vatican there are angels or was it demons, only Dan Brown would know).
The gelato sunday completed the blissful lunch.

If I was in the market for a priestly robe almost every other shop on the streets around the Vatican sells robes. Luckily I came away with many photos and no robes but a better knowledge about Rome.

I spotted a line of Jericho ducks in Rome today. They normally don’t migrate this far but today was a special case. It rained almost non-stop until we left. Everything was soaked: jackets, shoes, socks, shirts, slacks, and even our feathers. The good thing about rain in Rome is eating gelato sin a pizzeria and gelato store next to the Trevi Fountain where one can slightly dry out while waiting for the bus. But everything is tutto bene because it is Rome. No worries. There is pizza and stores all around. And don’t forget the gelato.

The best way to dry out wet shoes is to stuff the toe end with paper. The paper will soak up the moisture and help dry out your shoes. The next morning my soaked shoes were dry.

Our three course dinner will be the making of me or ruin depending upon how one views it. Delicious pasta followed by sliced beef and broccoli and cheese is like going to heaven. And then the next day pizza: sausage and mushroom pizza, and prosciutto and creme cheese pizza with a gelato ice cream afterward, and it is Christmas all over again.

For me the food is the real draw besides the little book store next to the Pantheon which sells leather bound journals and Italian leather goods like shoes or purses. It is all wonderful. Rome. City filled with intriguing little shops that put puchases into blue draw string bags with Manufactus printed on the front.
